WHAT IS PLA?
HD Wool Active contains 75% Woolkeepers wool and 25% PLA.
What is PLA?
PLA is a range of polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymers.
The process to create PLA uses the carbon stored in plants (sugar cane, sugar beets and corn). The carbon and other elements in these sugars are then used to make a biopolymer. This can be extruded as filament and cut into staple fibres for use in textiles applications.
PLA offers similar properties to polyester, but comes from renewable sources (plants) rather than petroleum oil based chemistry. Unlike polyester, PLA is industrially compostable at end of life.
Why do we use PLA in HDWool Active?
PLA is a thermoplastic fibre which is heated to create a bond between fibres in a textile structure. To give HDWool Active the high loft structure it is created with of network of wool fibres. By using some PLA fibres too we can stabilise this network by bonding the fibres to each other, limiting the fibre movement. This means that when HD Wool Active is used in clothing, the clothing can withstand up to 20 wash cycles and maintain the performance.
Wool is grown from verified farms, through our own assurance program known as The Woolkeepers®.
The Woolkeepers® connects land to animals to fibre. Upholding the highest standards of welfare, environmental conservation and transparency, approved by 3rd party verification bodies from farm gate to factory door.
real world testing.
Using 135 years of wool expertise, we tested our insulation in real world conditions. The results show us why wool is so good in active use vs polyester.
With a room temperature of 4°C and 80% relative humidity, we closely monitored factors such as skin temperature, heart rate, core body temperature, sweat volume and employed thermal imagery at standardised intervals for a comprehensive performance analysis.
Read our blog and watch the video summarising the Real World advantages of HD Wool Insulation.
The results show that when wearing HD®Wool Active compared to polyester,
Your skin temperature remains lower during exercise, ensuring unrivalled comfort and preventing overheating.
It keeps you warm during cool-down periods, preserving your body heat and shielding you from sudden chills.
It seamlessly integrates with your layering system, enabling extended activity without the worry of moisture accumulation.
These trials build upon earlier research, demonstrating that HD®Wool Active is the ultimate choice for active performance insulation under real-world testing conditions.
